Thomas Braun (born November 8, 1814 in Kommern ; † May 7, 1906 in Ixelles ) was a German-Belgian educator .

Life

Thomas Braun, actually Johannes Thomas Braun, grew up with his brother August Felix in the house of his father Conrad Braun in Kommern , where he owned a tannery. Thomas Braun's grandfather and great-grandfather had been members of the mayor and aldermen's college in Endenich , today part of Bonn .

Thomas Braun was sent to Malmedy by his father to improve his French because he said it could be useful for his later entry into the family business. However, Braun soon preferred the pedagogical career. He became a teacher and eventually headmaster in Nivelles .

Thomas Braun became known for his many scientific publications and textbooks on teacher training. He received orders from the Belgian government and designed presentations of the Belgian educational system for the world exhibitions in London in 1862 and in Paris in 1889 . In 1875 he was appointed inspector general of all state primary schools and teacher training courses in Belgium.

In 1842 Thomas Braun was a co-founder of the Cologne Men's Singing Association . In 1850 he acquired Belgian citizenship. From 1856 until his retirement in 1891, he published the monthly educational magazine L'Abeille through the Parent publishing house in Brussels. In 1872 he initiated the erection of a monument to Johannes Tinctoris in Nivelles.
