Ernest Slingeneyer (born May 28, 1820 in Lochristi , † April 27, 1894 in Brussels ) was a Belgian history painter .

Life

Slingeneyer was a pupil of Gustave Wappers , who aroused in him a fondness for historical representations and genre pictures.

Works known and loved in the 19th century were the sinking of the ship Le Vengeur from 1845, The death of the ship's captain Jacobsen , The death of Nelsons , The heroism of the French sailors of the ship Le Feu or Lutte en Mer (1795) , Philip the Good in the Battle of Brouwershaven (1852), The Battle of Lepanto (in the Modern Museum in Brussels), The last days of Pompeii (1890).

He later taught at the Atelier Libre Saint-Luc in Brussels. In 1894 he was a member of the admissions committee for the art exhibition at the World Expo 1894 in Antwerp.
