St. Severinus (Kommern)
St. Severinus is a Roman Catholic parish church in Kommern , a district of Mechernich in the Euskirchen district in North Rhine-Westphalia . It belongs to the Veytal Catholic pastoral care area.
history
The church , consecrated to the holy martyr Severin of Cologne , was first mentioned in a document in 1291 when a Fredericus de Kumbre was active there as a clergyman. The church was also mentioned in the Liber valoris around 1300. The church is located immediately north of Kommern Castle , the masters of which had the right of patronage .
In 1851 the medieval church was laid down except for the tower and in 1857–59 a representative three-aisled neo-Gothic basilica was built in its place according to plans by Vincenz Statz . The solemn consecration took place in 1864. The old tower was finally demolished in 1880. In 1888 the church received the striking tower it is today.
