history

The place Berg was first mentioned in a document dated July 1, 699. In the deed, Irmina von Oeren gave Willibrord and his Echternach Abbey the villa montis , as Berg was then called. Perhaps this estate, to which Berg Castle goes back, was connected to a small church at that time . Perhaps this was St. Peter consecrated, but this is not certain.

In the 10th century it was doubted whether the village of Berg is really owned by the Echternach Abbey, but these disputes were resolved in 997 by Emperor Otto III. settled by confirming Berg as the property of Echternach Abbey. At that time, a second abbey, St. Willibrord church was built.

In the Liber valoris of 1308, Berg is listed as a parish in the Deanery Zülpich, with St. Willibrord stated. In the update of the Liber valoris from 1510, the parish patron is St. Peter. In the visitation protocols of 1550 and 1559 there are reports of two parish churches in Berg. In fact, despite the small size of the village, there were two independent parishes in Berg, one of which was a parish church dedicated to St. Willibrord, the other to St. Consecrated Peter. In 1582 the two parishes were in union , that is, they were managed together, but purely legal point they persisted. It was not until 1686 that the two parishes were merged into one. The reason was that the parish church of St. Willibrord had become dilapidated and had to be closed.

During the French period , Berg came to the newly founded diocese of Aachen . In 1808 the ancient parish was dissolved and assigned as a branch to the parish of Eicks . This was not reversed until October 1, 1836, since then Berg has been an independent parish again. In 1825 the parish came back to the Archdiocese of Cologne, and since 1930 it has belonged to the re-established Diocese of Aachen.

Building history

The parish church of St. Willibrord was located in the middle of the village, it was probably built in the 11th century. In 1686 it fell into disrepair, but was rebuilt in 1715. In 1883 the church building was finally sold and no longer used for church services.

The parish church of St. Peter, which was probably the older of the two and perhaps goes back to a church building from the 7th century, stood on the site of the current church. It became unusable in the 1820s, which meant that the service had to be temporarily relocated to the Willibrodus Church. In 1864 the old St. Peter's Church was demolished and replaced by the current building. The new building was built between 1864 and 1866 according to plans by architect Lambert Geller from Kommern . The solemn church consecration was on August 3, 1867.

Grenade fire in 1945 as a result of the Second World War damaged the structure. By 1959 they had been fixed and a new sacristy had been built, the plans for it came from Werner Geyer from Mechernich.
