history

Eiserfey was first mentioned in a document as early as 867. A church in the village is not mentioned here. Only very late, namely in 1733, is the first documentary record of a chapel in Eiserfey. On May 29, 1733, the abbot of Steinfeld Monastery , Christian Steinhewer, was given permission to consecrate the Eiserfey chapel. At that time the place belonged to the parish of St. Cyriacus in Weyer . On January 16, 1869, Eiserfey became a chapel congregation within the Weyer parish and on October 19, 1914, Eiserfey was elevated to a parish vicarie and thus has all the rights of a parish , but is not officially a parish under canon law , but under state church law it is an independent congregation with its own Church council.

Building history

There was already a chapel in Eiserfey in the 17th century. This small chapel was extended to the west in 1733. In 1916 it was raised to the status of a parish vicarie and since then the church has had the status of a church. At the beginning of the 1930s the church became too small and in 1932 it was decided to expand it. Construction began in July 1934, and in September the eastern part, which dates back to the 17th century, was torn down and a two-aisled nave with a choir , apse and bell tower was added to the small western part from 1733 . The construction was completed in 1936. The plans for this came from the Sindorf architect Hans Jülich. Shortly before the end of the war, the church was damaged by artillery fire on March 6, 1945. This damage was repaired in 1952.

Building description

St. Wendelin is a two-aisled, plastered church building made of quarry stone in the formal language of reform architecture and heritage protection architecture . In the West, there is a baroque rectangular entrance hall via which an octagonal located ridge turret rises with curly hood. This part comes from the previous building from 1733. This is followed by the two-aisled nave. The main nave is vaulted with a flat barrel vault, the side aisle is separated from the main nave by three pillars. To the east of the main nave is the cross-rib vaulted choir bay, which closes with a semicircular apse. In the corner between the aisle and the choir stands the three-story bell tower, which is crowned by an eight-sided bent helmet. The sacristy is located on the lower floor . There are 150 seats available for the faithful.

Furnishing

In the interior there is an organ made by Weimbs Orgelbau , Hellenthal , from 1956 with six registers.
