Memorial plaque on the site of the synagogue

The Embken synagogue was located in the Embken district of Nideggen in the Düren district in North Rhine-Westphalia .

The Jews from Wollersheim and Berg also belonged to the synagogue community at that time, which had existed for over 600 years . The share of the Jewish population in Embken was 7.5% around 1900.

The half-timbered building was probably built in 1869. It was on the parcel in the Kirschgarten on Neffeltalstrasse. Photos and plans no longer exist.

The building did not have a basement. The walls on the first floor were made of quarry stone , and above them of half-timbering . The height of the building up to the eaves was about 5–6 m. The caretaker lived next to the synagogue. The house also belonged to the Jewish community.

During the November pogroms on November 10, 1938 (called Reichskristallnacht by the National Socialists ) the synagogue was set on fire and the inventory was destroyed. The vestments and the prayer scroll were burned in the courtyard . Straw was even fetched from a neighboring stable as a fire accelerator . Extinguishing the fire was not allowed.

On November 10, 2015, a memorial plaque was unveiled at the former synagogue site, donated by the Brandenburg couple.
