from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Vettweiß synagogue was located at Gereonstrasse 87 in Vettweiß in the Düren district in North Rhine-Westphalia .

history

Around 1890 a small state synagogue was built on the property of the wealthy real estate agent Naftali Bruch (born 1828 in Disternich , died 1900 in Vettweiß). Bruch lived next door in the Gereonstr house. 85. The initials N and B can still be read there today above the entrance archway.

As far as is known, there are no photos of the synagogue . Records were made of the interior design when the November pogrom was dealt with in 1938 in the 1950s. There was a women's gallery, pieces of furniture and benches, a desk, curtains, a seven-armed candlestick and Torah scrolls .

The director of the local dairy, Heinrich Josef Dohmen, had been the local group leader of the NSDAP since 1932 . He harassed the Jews and also other Vettweissers. He was the driving force behind the November pogrom on November 10, 1938, during which the Vettweiß synagogue was also destroyed. On the morning of November 10th, Dohmen broke into the interior of the synagogue with a mob and destroyed the inventory. The building was not burned down, otherwise the neighboring houses would have been endangered. Remnants of the facilities were transported to the dairy, stored there and later partially burned. Only the candlestick was brought into his house by a neighbor and thus saved. In the 1960s it came into the possession of the family doctor August Bender (and former concentration camp doctor!), Who practiced in the neighboring village of Kelz from 1949 to 1988 . Shortly before his death, Bender gave the menorah to the Rhineland Regional Council , which has been exhibiting it in the Rödingen synagogue since 2005 .
