Synagogue Langweiler

The Langweiler synagogue stood in the abandoned Aldenhoven district of Langweiler in the Düren district.

In 1842 there were 42 Jews living in the village. Until 1850, Langweiler belonged to the Jülich synagogue district . Aldenhoven, Bettenhoven , Hoengen , Laurenzberg , Niedermerz and Warden belonged to the later branch community Langweiler . It consisted of 189 people.

A prayer house has already been proven for 1844 . The synagogue was inaugurated on August 25, 1854 . It was in a courtyard on the main street. It was a rectangular brick building with a gable roof . The three arched windows were colorfully glazed. In 1929 the synagogue was completely renovated and the interior was repainted. The entrance was under the west gallery.

The program for the inauguration was as follows:

“1) On Friday morning, August 25, 1854, a deputation will pick up the chief rabiner. 2) At 2 to 3 o'clock the congregation gathers at Mr. Voss Robens, where the Thora's are set up and where the Mincha prayer is performed and Lechunerannano. 3) The pageant is organized as follows: The school-age girls, who carry flower baskets; the first of these carry the key of the synagogue on an ornate silk cushion. The boys follow: five specially invited, carrying the Torah scrolls. In the further sequence: The community board, in the middle of the chief rabiner, the singing choir and the community. When they arrive at the synagogue, the children form lines and have the Torah carried through. The Lord Mayor Lussem from Aldenhoven hands over the key to the Chief Rabiner. On the afternoon of the day before the Reichskristallnacht , namely on November 9, 1938, the synagogue was destroyed and looted, but not set on fire because of the existing neighboring buildings. In 1941 the building was bought by the civil parish, which set up a camp for Polish prisoners of war here. The house was later used as a tool shed. In 1953 the Jewish Trust Corporation took over the building and in 1963 RWE . In 1964 the synagogue was demolished, as was the entire place later.
