Gey synagogue

Memorial plaque on the house at Broichstrasse 5 in Hürtgenwald. This is where the Gey synagogue stood.

The Gey synagogue stood in the Gey district in the Hürtgenwald community in the Düren district , North Rhine-Westphalia .

A Jewish community in Gey was mentioned on January 1, 1866. Later, a small porch was built at Josef Meyer's house, Broichstrasse 5 . It was close to the street and only had two small windows. They were so high in the brickwork that you couldn't see inside the building. Religious celebrations were held there until around 1914. Josef Meyer was a prayer leader at the time .

Around 1930 the porch had become a dilapidated obstacle to traffic. The Geyer citizen, of Jewish faith, Seligmann Meyer, wanted to set up a butcher's shop there. Therefore the building was demolished. According to the plaque, however, the building was demolished to create living space. Later the building was actually used as living space and also as the Rößeler butcher's, which was run by the Rößeler family until 1988 (later Langenberg butcher's, from 2005 to 2014 Hallmanns; this local facility has been empty since 2016). A commemorative plaque was inaugurated on September 9, 2001 at Broichstrasse 5.
