Life

Walter Cüppers was born as the son of the teacher, botanist and draftsman Wilhelm Cüppers in 1925 in Embken in the Düren district. He was injured as a soldier in World War II . After starting out as an autodidact, he went to the Düsseldorf Art Academy in 1948 and studied in one class with Heinz Mack , Otto Piene , Hans Salentin and Gotthard Graubner . A travel grant brought Cüppers to Paris for half a year in the early 1950s , where he came into contact with informal art and took up and further developed his acrylic pictures. Back in Germany he met his future wife Elisabeth Wegener. In 1956 he accepted a position as an art teacher at the Rheinhausen High School for Natural Sciences . From 1963 to 1986 he was a lecturer and later professor for art didactics at the Pedagogical University of Neuss and at the University of Düsseldorf . He taught and inspired a great many young people. He had his studio in Selikum , where he painted, drew and sculpted almost to the end. The elaboration of his acrylic pictures sometimes stretched out over many years. His sculptures and drawings belong to representational art . Since 1955 he has had many solo exhibitions and participations in exhibitions as a painter and sculptor. Cüppers had his last major exhibition in 2014/15 in the “Alte Post” in Neuss on the occasion of his 90th birthday.
