The Schanzlbrücke is the largest bridge in Passau and spans the Danube at the height of the " Neue Mitte " at river kilometer 2226.98 . On the northern driveway is Eggendobl Castle , whose castle church and defensive wall were demolished when the bridge was built.

The construction of the bridge was decided on January 13, 1961 by the city council. Construction began in 1968, on February 21, 1970, when the middle section was inserted, the shell was completed and the topping-out ceremony was celebrated on March 18.

After a stress test on September 19, 1970, the inauguration took place on October 14, in the presence of the then Federal Minister of Transport, Georg Leber . After the opening of traffic over the Schanzlbrücke, the Maxbrücke , which had been around 300 m to the east and had existed since 1823, was closed to traffic and dismantled in 1972.
