Gustav Ross (born September 29, 1818 in Altekoppel , † May 8, 1861 in Altona ) was a German doctor, orthopedist and private lecturer.

Live and act

Gustav Ross was a son of the farmer Colin Ross (born August 9, 1780 in Hamburg ; † August 29, 1862 in Schönböken ) and his wife Juliane Auguste, née Remien (born September 25, 1784; † March 26, 1865 in Bornhöved ). He had four brothers, including the painter Charles Roß and the archaeologist Ludwig Ross .

Ross attended high schools in Plön and Eutin and studied philology at the University of Kiel from 1838 to 1840 . At this university he switched completely to medicine and then attended universities in Munich and Würzburg . In 1843 he received his doctorate from Kiel University and passed the state examination there. He then worked for two years as an assistant at the General Hospital in Hamburg.

In 1845/46 Ross studied in Paris and Berlin with Jules Guérin and Johann Friedrich Dieffenbach . Both physicians shaped Ross' later orthopedic career. He gained further experience in the field of orthopedic surgery from 1846 to as a lecturer with Bernhard von Langenbeck and Louis Stromeyer in the ophthalmology department at the Kiel University Surgical Clinic. During the Schleswig-Holstein uprising he fought as a volunteer in 1848/49 and was imprisoned near Bau. After an exchange, he took over command of military hospitals in Flensburg and Altona as senior and battalion doctor .

In 1851 Ross, who confessed to the Enlightenment, ended his academic career and founded his own orthopedic, surgical and ophthalmological institute in Altona, which offered him a secure income. It was the third such facility in Schleswig-Holstein, making the orthopedic surgeon one of the pioneers in the field in the region. His institute quickly gained a good reputation.

Due to health problems, Ross could only practice to a limited extent after a few years. In 1857 and 1858 he lived for a long time to relax on Sylt and for this reason occupied himself with effective advertising for the seaside resort of Westerland . In 1859/60 he traveled to Madeira and Lake Geneva for unsuccessful cures .
