Crossing the river through the Canal de la Bourne

The Bourne is a river in France that runs in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region . It rises in the Vercors Mountains, in the local area of Lans-en-Vercors , generally drains southwest to west through the Vercors Regional Nature Park , where it is dammed near Choranche in Lac de Choranche to generate energy. The Bourne flows into the Isère after 43 kilometers below Saint-Nazaire-en-Royans , on the municipal border with Saint-Just-de-Claix , as a left tributary in the backwater of a hydropower plant . The Bourne runs largely in the Isère department and forms the border to the neighboring Drôme department on some sections, especially in the estuary section between Pont-en-Royans and Saint-Nazaire-en-Royans .

Places on the river

Canal de la Bourne

In the second half of the 19th century, water from the Bourne river was diverted below Pont-en-Royans and channeled into the Valence plain in an artificially constructed canal bed 46 kilometers in length to ensure the water supply for the arable land. The Canal de la Bourne initially follows the Bourne river to its confluence with the Isère, then further south following the river to Bourg-de-Péage , where it branches off to the south and is due to a distribution basin in the vicinity of Valence which in principle dissolves water withdrawals. The canal has a large number of engineering structures ( tunnels , aqueducts , barrages , pumping systems, etc.) and is still in operation. Every year it supplies between 15 and 30 million m³ of water for the irrigation of around 10,000 hectares of cultivated land.
