history
etymology
The name Bourg-de-Péage is derived from Bourg , the French word for village, municipality, and Péage , the term for toll . This name comes from the fact that there was a bridge toll in the community in the Middle Ages. Travelers across the Isère had to pay the customs officer a certain fee so that the stone bridge could be maintained by the city of Romans.
In that time there next to the bridge only a few buildings: a stone tower with the apartment of the tax collector ; the Notre-Dame-du-Pont chapel and a small hospital building right by the bridge. This infrastructure was often damaged by the Isère. The tower building disappeared in the 17th century. The building was later reconstructed, but both the bridge and the surrounding buildings were destroyed in World War II. However, these historical buildings have been rebuilt and are now a tourist attraction .
