Bathernay is a French municipality with 254 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Drôme in the region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes (before 2016 Rhône-Alpes ); it belongs to the arrondissement of Valence and the canton of Drôme des collines (until 2015 Saint-Donat-sur-l'Herbasse ). The inhabitants are called the bathernois .

Bathernay is about 25 kilometers north-northeast of Valence . Bathernay is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Saint-Avit in the north and north-west, Tersanne in the north and north-east, Montchenu in the east and north-east, Charmes-sur-l'Herbasse in the south and east and Ratières in the west and south-west.
