Super-16 is an image format that is used in film productions (mostly TV productions).

Super-16 is based on the field of view of 12.35 × 7.42 mm (width by height). The aspect ratio is 5 to 3 or 1: 1.66. In contrast to the normal image on 16 mm film, Super 16 offers a good 20 percent more usable negative image area and thus a better resolution.

The format was invented by the Swedish cameraman Rune Ericson , who received the Award of Commendation from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in 2002 for this fundamental technical innovation . He had used the format for the first time in 1969 when filming his film "Lyckliga Skitar" (German: "Happy Fuckers").

Super 16 is mostly used in TV film productions because it is of good quality and significantly cheaper than 35 mm film. Only a few cinemas have 16mm film projectors. If you want to bring a Super 16 production to the cinemas, the so-called blow-up process offers the possibility of transferring the images onto 35 mm film.

There was also a draft of the Swiss Rudolf pattern for a Super 16 format, which both sides a Super 8 - perforation has.

Some of the Super 16 cameras available on the market include:
