Arri PL

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Arri PL ( PL for positive lock ) is a lens connection system for use with 16 mm , 35 mm and digital cinema cameras . As a rule, specially developed cine lenses are used in cinematography .

The connector was developed by ARRI around 1980 as the successor to the previous bayonet lock introduced in 1965 , but is not compatible with older connectors from Arri because it has a larger diameter. Older Arri connection systems can be connected to PL using an adapter. A special feature is the possibility of attaching lenses to the camera in four different orientations, each rotated by 90 °, in order to bring the controls and displays to the optimal positions for the respective situation.

The PL connection has been successfully established since its introduction at Photokina 1982 and is supported by numerous manufacturers of cinema cameras, such as:

  • Arri with the ARRI 535 mechanical 35mm camera ,
  • Aaton with the mechanical 35 mm camera Aaton 35 and the mechanical 16 mm camera Aaton XTR ,
  • Red Digital Cinema Camera Company with the Red One 35mm digital camera
  • Canon : Cinema EOS cameras. The Cinema EOS cameras are supplied with both PL and EF connectors,
  • P + S Technik with their digital 16 mm camera SI-2K and the Weisscam ,
  • Sony supplies some CineAlta cameras with PL mount, such as the F65 or the Sony VENICE.

and from lens manufacturers such as:

Arri lenses can be retrofitted with a mount (lens data mount) that provides electrical information on lens values to the camera and is part of the Arri Lens Data System. The variant LDM-1 is compatible with most fixed focal lengths, LDM-2 with lenses that use an intermediate connection (Angénieux, Cooke zoom lenses, Zeiss Tessar 300 mm).

35-millimeter adapters make it possible to achieve the depth of field of the 35-mm area with a conventional video camera, which, however, can result in certain losses in terms of light screens and sharpness.
