action

Max Sternheim lives with his father in a small German town. The mother died, which is still very troubling for Max. He doesn't want to let his father fall in love again. But Mr. Sternheim only has eyes for the new tenant, Ms. Lichtblau. A short time later, an old friend appears in the father's pharmacy and brings Sternheim a mysterious substance. After a test on a houseplant it becomes clear that the mixture has magical powers. It makes the plant grow supernaturally fast.

On a farm, Max meets the stray dog, which he is allowed to take home and which he calls Bello. By chance, Bello drinks the magical liquid and becomes a person. From then on, “Mr. Bello” lives in the Sternheim's house and has to get used to human customs. While Max's father tries to ensnare Mrs. Lichtblau, Mr. Bello also discovers his interest in the pretty lodger. Max immediately senses his chance to distract Mrs. Lichtblau from his father and tries to couple Mr. Bello with her.

After a few entanglements, Max cleverly manages to meet the two of them in a restaurant. However, when Mr. Bello happily sets off on his way, the effects of the magic potion evaporate and Mr. Bello becomes Bello again, who nevertheless goes to the restaurant. When Mr. Sternheim learns of the appointment, he hurries to clear up the matter. In the restaurant Ms. Lichtblau is informed by him about the transformation of Bello, whereupon she leaves the restaurant angrily. Max now realizes that he made a mistake. With Bello's help, his father mixes a new bottle of magic drink so that Ms. Lichtblau can see with her own eyes how Bello transforms into Mr. Bello again. After the demonstration, she takes Mr. Sternheim in her arms and marries him a little later.

“The imaginative as well as fast-paced children's film has grown considerably after a cautious start and shows its most entertaining side. The playful actors also contribute to the successful staging. "
