Rune Ericson

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rune Ericson (born May 29, 1924 in Stockholm , Sweden ; † February 4, 2015 in Thailand ) was a Swedish cameraman and inventor of the Super 16 technology with occasional excursions to directing a documentary.

Life

Ericson, one of the leading image designers in his country since the mid-1960s, received his training in photography and camera technology in the late phase of the Second World War , was responsible for shooting a short film as early as 1944 and at the end of the war began his work initially as a still photographer and second cameraman for the children's film Die Children from Wildbachfelsen (Barnen från Frostmofjället) under the direction of Sven Nykvist , who has just become head cameraman . Just two years later, Rune Ericson was promoted to chief cameraman himself.

Until the 1960s, he mostly had to deal with the photography of secondary filmed entertainment content, then Ericson worked regularly with renowned directors such as Mai Zetterling , Jörn Donner , Vilgot Sjöman , Jarl Kulle and with the Americans Susan Sontag and Jerry Lewis in whose mysterious concentration camp drama The Day the Clown Cried he was also behind the camera. Occasionally, assignments also took him to Germany: in 1955 he worked as a simple cameraman under Göran Strindberg's chief camera in the German-Swedish joint production Schwedenmädel as well as behind the camera in 1972 in the 1972 Munich Olympic film - 8 famous directors watch the XX games . Olympics . However, he celebrated his greatest successes with films suitable for children and young people such as Ronja the Robber's Daughter , which were often based on models by Astrid Lindgren .

Rune Ericson has also photographed and directed a number of documentaries; his 1962 work on the painter Hagalund earned him the nomination for the Golden Bear at the 1964 Berlinale . He has also distinguished himself as an accomplished camera technician and inventor of the super 16 mm technology. For this achievement he was awarded a technology Oscar in 2002.

Ericson has also excelled artistically in other areas: as a guitarist, pianist, singer and painter of oil paintings.

Rune Ericson died while on vacation in Thailand.
