Horst Ehrmantraut (born December 11, 1955 in Einöd ) is a former German football player and coach . As a player, he made 81 appearances in the 1st Bundesliga (one goal) and 172 appearances (18 goals) in the 2nd Bundesliga . For FC 08 Homburg he played a total of 201 games in which he scored 16 goals. As a coach, he led Eintracht Frankfurt and 1. FC Saarbrücken to promotion to the next higher league.

Career as a player

Ehrmantraut started playing soccer at SpVgg. Einöd-Ingweiler. In the summer of 1975, the 19-year-old defender moved to the second division club F.C. Homburg-Saar , after turning down offers to leave his home club two years earlier. On August 9, 1975 (1st matchday) Ehrmantraut made his professional debut in the game against SpVgg Bayreuth when he was substituted on for Giovanni Nicastro in the 1-1 draw in the 75th minute . Under coach Uwe Klimaschefski he was also used as a midfielder and developed into a regular player. In four years of the second division Ehrmantraut played 131 times for the Homburgers and scored 13 goals. In 1979 he moved to the first division club Eintracht Frankfurt . There he was initially only used sporadically by coach Friedel Rausch and made his debut in the 1st Bundesliga on November 17, 1979 (13th matchday) in the 0-1 defeat at VfL Bochum . After only one use in the first half of the season, twelve more games followed in the second half of the season. Ehrmantraut made four appearances in winning the UEFA Cup in the same season, including two finals.

After only one year in Frankfurt, Uwe Klimaschefski brought his former protégé to the first division relegated Hertha BSC . In his first season with the Berlin team, Ehrmantraut scored ten goals, never before and never again in his professional career. After the Bundesliga promotion in 1982, the direct relegation followed. In five years with the old lady Ehrmantraut came to 140 second division appearances with 15 goals as well as 30 Bundesliga games and one goal. He later described Berlin as his most beautiful player station. In 1985 he went back to FC 08 Homburg, with whom he achieved the first promotion to the House of Lords the following year. As in Berlin, he was a regular player for the Green-Whites, but only made 38 appearances in two years due to injury. After a total of 70 games and three goals Ehrmantraut came on April 30, 1988 (30th matchday) in the 1: 5 defeat at Hannover 96 for his last professional appearance; in the 34th minute he was substituted for Luciano Martins .

Career as a coach

From March 1990 until his release in May 1991 Ehrmantraut was the head coach of the second division club Blau-Weiß 90 Berlin ; since 1989 he was already employed by the club as an amateur and co-trainer. On July 1, 1991, the Saarlander took over the coaching position at SV Meppen . In the following seasons he led the club into the top tier of the 2nd Bundesliga. Ehrmantraut's engagement in Meppen ended in mid-April 1996, and shortly before Christmas 1996 he was hired as the successor to the dismissed Dragoslav Stepanović at his former club Eintracht Frankfurt. In 1998 he achieved promotion to the 1st Bundesliga with the Frankfurt team after two years of abstinence. After the 16th match day of the following season Ehrmantraut was dismissed in December 1998, with the team in 15th place. Between February 2000 and April 2001 Ehrmantraut coached the second division Hannover 96. For the 2002/03 season he was coach of the regional division 1. FC Saarbrücken , in November 2003 the dismissal followed. In April 2004, new coach Eugen Hach was released after less than six months in Saarbrücken, and Ehrmantraut took over the coaching position again. At the end of the season the team was promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga after two coach changes. In August 2005 he was released again at 1. FC Saarbrücken.

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Bundesliga, Ehrmantraut was elected to a “Saarland anniversary team” in 2013. All Saarlanders who had played in the Bundesliga since 1963 were up for a vote, which was organized by Ellenfeld eV and the Saarpark Center .

The plastic chair

As a trainer at Eintracht Frankfurt, Ehrmantraut sat on the edge of the field most of the time during the games on a white plastic chair , a simple model that can be found in any hardware store . It was said that he would "fix" the players from there. In this context "energy fields" were also used. Years later, however, he said in an interview that from there he was able to concentrate much better on the individual players and the game. There would have been too much unrest on the bench for that.

The chair had already achieved cult status at that time. After Ehrmantraut was released, it was not disposed of but carefully kept in a storage room. He has now been given a place of honor. It stands under the glass cover of a showcase of the Eintracht Museum in the Commerzbank-Arena , the former Waldstadion.
