The Saarpark-Center is a shopping center in Neunkirchen (Saar) . It is operated by ECE Projektmanagement GmbH & Co. KG in Hamburg.

history

After the decline of the Neunkirchen ironworks and the acquisition of the majority of the old site by the district town, most of the old buildings were demolished. As a result, a restructuring and renewal of the city center of Neunkirchen was considered. The city center should be expanded to the west. First of all, the Neunkircher business world was offered the option of creating and operating a joint shopping center. However, this plan met with rejection. Finally, an investor was found in the ECE project management in Hamburg.

Construction work began on November 6, 1987 and lasted almost two years. The Saarpark Center was inaugurated on August 31, 1989. An ad was placed in the Saarbrücker Zeitung showing the then Federal Chancellor Helmut Kohl toasting “Mr. LA von Taine” and all Saarlanders with a glass of sparkling wine and toasting the new center. It was a fake that was quickly denied by the Federal Chancellery . The center management publicly apologized for the unsuccessful joke. At that time, the Saarpark Center comprised a sales area of 28,000 square meters.

An extension to 33,500 square meters was later commissioned and opened in October 1999. In 2009 the center was rebuilt and upgraded. In 2014 there was a two-week 25-year anniversary celebration. The speakers included the Saarland Prime Minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer , the then District Administrator Cornelia Hoffmann-Bethscheider, Lord Mayor Jürgen Fried and his predecessor Friedrich Decker . Other guests were the footballer Stefan Kuntz , the two musical actors Axel Herrig and Aino Laos and the Dutch presenter Harry Wijnvoord . Filmmaker Hans-Günther Ludwig shot a 25-minute corporate film.

Condition and location

The Saarpark-Center is located in the city center of Neunkircher and is centrally connected to the local public transport of the Neunkircher Verkehrs-Gesellschaft . It has three parking garages with 1,600 parking spaces. The store itself extends over two floors and comprises 33,500 square meters of retail space with currently 130 specialty stores. Around 1,200 people currently work in the shopping center.
