Frank Schön (born January 15, 1971 in Weißenfels ) is a former German football player .

Athletic career

Frank Schön started playing football at Halleschen FC Chemie at the age of five . He went through all the children's and junior teams and was also spotted for the various selection teams and the TC training. In 1984 he came to the children's and youth sports school "Friedrich Engels" in Halle / Saale. His classmate and bank neighbor was Dariusz Wosz . Appearances in the district and district selection Halle as well as in the GDR junior national teams followed.

For the 1989/90 season, Frank Schön was appointed to the 1st men's team of the HFC Chemie . As part of the guest play permit established at that time for connecting squads of the upper division teams in the second-class league in this game year, Frank Schön was able to collect match practice in the men's division at SG Dessau 89 from August 1989 to February 1990. At the same time, the 18-year-old earned his first spurs in the East German elite division. So he made his league debut on November 25, 1989 against 1. FC Magdeburg . In the 1990/91 season Hallesche FC took 4th place and qualified for both the 2nd Bundesliga and the UEFA Cup . From 1991 Frank Schön played in the 2nd Bundesliga South and played two UEFA Cup games against Torpedo Moscow . Hallesche FC had to go into the relegation round and were relegated. The team then fell apart after players like Dariusz Wosz, René Tretschok , Karsten Neitzel , Dirk Wüllbier , Alexander Löbe and Tom Persich left the club.

Frank Schön wanted to stay in Halle, but was drafted into the Bundeswehr in Kassel . There he did his military service and joined the KSV Hessen Kassel . After initial injuries, he got better and better and attracted the attention of higher-class clubs. The then second division Wuppertaler SV engaged the defender, who was assigned to the sports promotion group in Essen and there ended his military service. After two years in the 2nd Bundesliga and Regional League he was discovered by Rudi Assauer for Schalke 04 and brought to Gelsenkirchen .

Frank Schön made his debut in the 1st Bundesliga on August 18, 1995 against FC Hansa Rostock in the FC Schalke 04 jersey . After Thomas Linke's injury , Frank Schön was supposed to play from the start in the upcoming game, but was injured in the following week of training and had to take a long break. In addition to Thomas Dooley , Yves Eigenrauch and Andreas Müller , Marco Kurz was another alternative in the central defense area. This season, FC Schalke 04 took 3rd place and qualified for the UEFA Cup competition. Frank Schön was part of the squad of the legendary "Eurofighter", which won the 1997 UEFA Cup . His coaches in the Bundesliga were Jörg Berger and Huub Stevens . In the winter break of 1997, he moved to the relegation-threatened second division SV Waldhof Mannheim despite the current contract . However, the service provider could not prevent the team from relegating on the last day of the Bundesliga. He came back to the Ruhr area in Bochum and was part of the SG Wattenscheid 09 squad .

After two years, his sporting path led him to FC Gütersloh. Despite the financial problems of the ailing club under coach Gerhard Kleppinger and assistant coach Rob Reekers, the newly formed team played an outstanding role in the Regionalliga West. After the winter break, bankruptcy was filed in February 2000 and Frank Schön went to FC Carl Zeiss Jena . Together with his club-mate Michael Mason , he made a significant contribution to FC Carl Zeiss Jena remaining in the regional league. After a 13th place in the winter break, an excellent 4th place was achieved in the end. With this, the Jenaer managed the direct qualification and remained in the newly structured Regionalliga Süd. On September 10, 2000, Schön seriously injured his cruciate ligament during an away game against FC Bayern's reserve in Munich and almost had to end his career after complications. His team rose during this time from the regional league to the league. Schön, who still had a contract, now had to play in what was then the 4th division.

After a year in clinic and rehabilitation, he made his comeback in 2001 against SG Dynamo Dresden in the Oberliga Nordost. After the targeted promotion was missed, numerous leading players, including Frank Schön, no longer received a contract. He was brought to Fortuna Düsseldorf by Slavko Petrović and should lead a young inexperienced team there and keep the class. As captain, he was able to achieve these goals and in the following year he was promoted to the regional league. Sports director Thomas Berthold and trainer Massimo Morales planned, for many fans and connoisseurs of the area, this was surprising, no longer with the promotion hero. His path led to the regional league team Wuppertaler SV, where he supported the second substitute as a leading player. After more than ten years he played again with his former companion Knut Hartwig and was even called up to the first team again. The veteran played out all his experience against Union Berlin and VfL Osnabrück. Due to his professional commitment, he refrained from further assignments and concentrated on the management of the football department in the large sports and leisure complex Cosmo Sports GmbH in Düsseldorf. After a one-year break, he played until the end of his career at the regional league club FC Remscheid , with whom he made it to the Niederrheinliga in 2009 .

Further career

In 2009 he moved to Jena. In the university town on the Saale, Schön became the father of a son. The tournament was broadcast live on sports television and the proceeds went to the victims of the earthquake disaster in Japan. At the beginning of 2012, Schön took over the position of responsible trainer at the Thuringian league club SC 1903 Weimar , which he held until the end of the season.
