Career

player

Even in his youth, the above-average offensive talent of the young Werner Stahl at Rot-Weiß Oberhausen stood out. With the Ruhr-Niederrhein (Oberhausen) regional team, the lightning-fast winger won the German youth championship in 1940 in Breslau with his club colleague Hans Ostrycharczyk with a 3-0 win against Mittel-Elbe (Magdeburg). Under RWO trainer Theodor Lohrmann , the young hope was built into the first team in the 1939/40 season. On October 15, 1939, in a 3-0 away win against Essen-West 81, he made his first game in the first team. In the Lower Rhine division, Oberhausen finished in 5th place after 18 games with 20:16 points.

The "Kleeblattelf" took six, five and six places in the Gauliga Niederrhein in the following rounds of war . At the end of the 1943/44 season , KSG Rot-Weiß / Alstaden Oberhausen ranked fourth. The future national defender Erich Juskowiak made his debut at RWO in the Gauliga in this round. Key players at Werner Stahl's side in this phase were goalkeepers Willy Jürissen , Willi Ickeltrath , Franz Pyta, Robert Schröder, Paul Scholz, August Groß , Willi Overkamp, Karl Bäcker, Hermann Bäcker, Peter Maaßen and Heinz Otten .

After the end of the Second World War , Oberhausen first won the Oberhausen city championship in the district of Rechter Niederrhein. 2, then on May 12, 1946 with a 2-0 win against Sterkrade 06/07 with right winger Stahl the Oberhausen city championship. In the district championship, Red-White prevailed with 8-0 points ahead of Meidericher SV, VfB Speldorf, VfB Lohberg and VfB Rheingold Emmerich. In the last group game against VfB Lohberg, Stahl scored three goals in an 8-0 win, the other five were due to Werner Günther. Stahl won with RWO on September 1, 1946 2-0 against VfL Benrath - with their aces Karl Hohmann , Josef Rasselnberg , Paul Mebus - the final of the Lower Rhine Championship. In front of 30,000 spectators, coach Karl Winkler had the host in the Niederrheinstadion with goalkeeper Willy Jürissen, the defenders Franz Pyta , Willi Ickelrath, the runners Hermann Rütter , Robert Schröder , Bruno Jezewski and the attack with Werner Stahl, Werner Günther , Willi Rahmann , August “Gustl “Groß and Heinz Otten sent them to the lawn. Fortuna Düsseldorf, Rheydter Spielverein, Sportfreunde Katernberg and SC Rot-Weiß Oberhausen met in May in the final round of the Niederrhein Championship in 1947. The group games ended Düsseldorf and Oberhausen with 5: 1 points each and therefore carried out a playoff for the championship on June 7, 1947 in Hamborn. In front of 38,000 spectators, the title was defended with a 3: 1 and thus the admission to the new Oberliga West from the season 1947/48 and the entry into the zone championship . In the first round (June 22nd in Hamburg) there was a 3-2 win after extra time against Eintracht Braunschweig. In the semifinals, Stahl and RWO failed on July 6th in front of 35,000 spectators in Duisburg after a 3-1 defeat at Hamburger SV, which also won the championship with a 1-0 win against Borussia Dortmund.

From 1947 to 1950 he played in the Oberliga West , founded in 1947 , a total of 71 league games in which he scored 17 goals for his home club RW Oberhausen. He made his debut on September 14, 1947 (1st matchday) in a 5-2 win in the away game against STV Horst-Emscher in the Oberliga West. In the attack, RWO took on Stahl, Günther, Groß, Werner Cornelissen and Otten in the Fürstenberg Stadium. In the 13th season, Oberhausen took 5th place and the winger had scored seven goals in 22 league appearances. In the second year, Stahl and colleagues were able to repeat the 5th place in the table, but fell back to 11th place in the third league year, now in a 16-man relay. Only on the last round match day, May 7, 1950, could the final league be secured with a 5-3 home win against champions Borussia Dortmund. Stahl had scored seven goals in 29 league appearances.

The former youth player from RWO joined the league competitor SV Hamborn 07 shortly before the start of the 1950/51 season and still in the middle of the games for the West German Cup and put on the jersey of the black and yellow "lions". He was one of the strongest Oberhausen players and had held the position of right winger since 1939 and had developed into one of the best West German wingers. At the same time, Erich Juskowiak also left RWO, he joined SSV Wuppertal in the 2nd League West. In the first year in Hamborn, 1950/51, Stahl experienced a satisfactory round with reaching 7th rank and 27 league appearances with nine goals alongside fellow players such as goalkeeper Werner Kisker , Edmund Czaika , Walter Dongmann , Max Oles , Adolf Schönborn and Franz Trapphoff . In the second year, 1951/52, Stahl rose with Hamborn 07 as bottom of the table from the Oberliga to the 2nd League West. In this round he had only scored one goal for Harmborn in 19 league appearances and from the summer of 1952 he rejoined his home club Rot-Weiß Oberhausen in the 2nd West League.

The first second division round was unfortunate; In the middle of the second half of the season he broke his fibula and was only able to play 18 league games with three goals for the Niederrheinstadion team. After three more second division rounds, the trained tax specialist took over the position of player-coach at RWO in the 1956/57 season. He led the team with players like Willi Demski and Karl-Otto Marquardt straight away with the runner-up - Stahl himself had played in six rounds - back to the Oberliga West.

Trainer

For three rounds, from 1957 to 1960, Stahl was the coach of RWO in the first-class Oberliga West. After the league return he reached in 1957/58 with the 11th rank and players like Karl-Heinz Feldkamp , Friedhelm Kobluhn , Fredi Lauten , Siegfried Lüger and goalkeeper Ernst Saturday the desired relegation. In the next two rounds Jürgen Sundermann and goalkeeper Helmut Traska joined the team, but the way to midfield was not successful. In the summer of 1960, Stahl ended his first coaching career at his hometown club. Then he underlined his ability as a coach by winning the championship with VfB Bottrop in the 2nd League West in 1962/63. In the debut year of the second-rate Regionalliga West, 1963/64, he finished 17th with Bottrop and VfB was relegated to the amateur camp.

Then he followed the call of RWO again and took over his home club in the Regionalliga West in the two rounds 1966/67 and 1967/68. In the second year, 1967/68, he failed with one point behind Bayer Leverkusen and Rot-Weiss Essen - both had 52:16 points - with 51:17 points in 3rd place in the Bundesliga promotion round. He moved his coaching activity from 1968/69 to the amateur area at Westfalia Herne in the Association League Westphalia. He took over the relegated regional league and relied on the A-youth team, who had become West German runner-up in 1968. In the second year, 1969/70, the championship was won by one point over FV Hombruch. On the penultimate matchday, May 10, 1970, in front of 12,000 spectators in the stadium at Strünkede Castle, Fritz Huth achieved the decisive 3-2 victory in the 90th minute . After the promotion round he rose together with Eintracht Gelsenkirchen with Herne in the Regionalliga West. In the 1970/71 regional league season he finished 12th with the promoted team, but signed a new contract with SG Wattenscheid 09 for the 1971/72 season. After another round, the Regional League West chapter was over for Stahl and he was only in the future still active in Westphalian amateur football.
