The Meiderich Stadium is a pure football stadium , which originally was the venue for the first team of the Meiderich Spielverein (today MSV Duisburg) founded in 1902 . In 1963 they finally moved to the Wedaustadion , but the facility, located on Westender Strasse in the Duisburg district of Meiderich , still serves as a venue for encounters between youth teams and is part of the training grounds of the MSV Duisburg.

location

The stadium is located in the Meiderich district of Duisburg near the site of the former Westende colliery . It is surrounded by several other soccer fields, which also belong to the training grounds of the MSV. A railway line runs a few hundred meters south, and the Ruhr flows around a kilometer to the south .

history

Since the Meidericher Spielverein was founded in 1902, the area on the edge of the Westende colliery has been the club's venue. In its early days, it was also in the immediate vicinity of the Ratingsee, which was filled in in 1911. At first it was just a simple sports field, with the spoil dump of the neighboring colliery serving as a grandstand-like structure. The growing sporting success prompted those responsible in 1921 to convert the square into a stadium. To do this, they first leased a large piece of land from an adjacent farm, and ramparts were built up to use them as standing stands. Because it was still a very simple facility, the Meidericher avoided important games such as the finals of the German championship in the Duisburg stadium, which later became the Wedaustadion.

In 1951, the MSV achieved promotion to the Oberliga West , which made a renewed stadium expansion necessary. In the following period, space for up to 27,000 spectators was created, and in the first half of the 1960/61 season there were further renovations. In 1963 the Meidericher were one of the founding members of the Bundesliga and had to move permanently to the Wedau Stadium due to the demands that this created. As a result, the Meiderich stadium remained almost unused for a few years until the city of Duisburg turned it into a district sports facility in the 1970s. In the following decade, the MSV rediscovered the stadium's potential and initiated another phase of renovation. The home ground for the club's second team and youth teams was created, with a capacity of 5,000 . Since the second team was canceled at the end of the 2015/16 season, they played their last home game in Meiderich on May 29, 2016.
