The fortification on the Zottaschen is a castle stable near Bad Berneck in the Fichtelgebirge .

Geographical location

The Burgstall is on the top of the mountain called Zottaschen on the former border between Micheldorfer Flur and Bernecker Flur. Micheldorf , which was founded before the year 1000 due to the ending -dorf , is about 400 meters away. The probably Carolingian - Ottonian section fortification on the Hohe Warte is around one kilometer away. In the valley, Bundesstraße 2 follows the course of the former via imperii .

History and interpretation of the facility

The weir system was first mentioned in the land book of 1536 as a castle stables.

Hellmut Kunstmann classifies these as the forerunners of the tower hill, i.e. a moth and the earliest defense system in the area of the Walpotic dominion around Berneck. According to Kunstmann, it refers to the time the area was opened up. Winkler believes that the fortification that he classified as a castle was built in the early 11th century at the latest. An interpretation as a watch tower in connection with the section fortification Hohe Warte was considered.

The Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation lists the ground monument as a medieval castle stables under monument number D-4-5935-0080.

Building stock

Hellmut Kunstmann was able to describe the system, which has since been removed. The center of the castle stables was formed by a circular depression only about five meters in diameter. A wall with a maximum height of 1.6 meters led closely around this part, which was probably to be reconstructed as a tower. There were no longer any traces of trenches.
