career

Beginnings and the 1972 Olympics

Wienhold began his footballer career at the age of eight with the Duisburg suburban club DJK Wanheimerort, from whose A-youth he moved in the summer of 1966 to the “foal team” of Meidericher SV . At that time, Manfred Manglitz, a first-class goalkeeper with prospects for the next few years , was part of the Zebras Bundesliga team . During a cup match between the MSV amateurs and Eintracht Frankfurt , he was discovered by a board member of FC Singen 04 in southern Baden .

The football goalkeeper, who switched to FC Singen 04, completed an apprenticeship as a fitter and did military service . Wienhold won the championship in the 1st amateur league Black Forest-Bodensee with FC in the 1971/72 round and took part in the promotion round to the Regionalliga Süd . Since there was a tie with 9: 3 points after the group matches with SV Waldhof Mannheim , a playoff in Offenburg decided on promotion to the Regionalliga Süd. On June 17, 1972, the "Waldhof boys" won the playoff with 1-0 goals. Previously, on January 12, 1972, the goalkeeper of Singen 04 made his debut in the national soccer team of the amateurs at the international match in Utrecht against the Netherlands (juniors) with a 2-0 victory. He played two more appearances in the goal of the DFB selection on March 15 and April 18 against France and Denmark in the second half of the 1971/72 season. In all three matches - they ended 2-0, 4-0 and 1-0 - Wienhold conceded no goal. So he played his way into the squad for the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich. For the 1972/73 round he moved to the Bundesliga at Eintracht Frankfurt , but remained an Olympic amateur and was therefore able to contest the Olympic football tournament in August / September 1972 with the DFB amateurs.

Jupp Derwall , the assistant coach of national coach Helmut Schön , was responsible for the amateur national team and went into the tournament with Günter Wienhold as number one, Hans-Jürgen Bradler had to make do with the reserve role. Wienhold guarded the DFB goal in the five tournament games against Malaysia, Morocco, USA, Mexico and Hungary. In the final prestige game on September 8th in Munich against the GDR, Bradler and Wienhold swapped roles. The hoped-for Olympic success did not materialize, but the experience of the Olympic Games as an active participant is still a highlight of Wienhold's sporting career.

Eintracht Frankfurt 1972 to 1978

In Wienhold's first season in Frankfurt, coach Erich Ribbeck clearly relied on Peter Kunter in goal. The goalkeeper of the amateur national team was able to prove his skills in just four missions in the 1972/73 season. Coach Dietrich Weise solved the competitive situation in the goal Solomonic: Kunter and Wienhold were each a half series in the goal of Eintracht, both made 17 appearances in the 1973/74 round . In the DFB Cup, Wienhold was in goal in the successes against Tennis Borussia Berlin , KSV Hessen Kassel and 1. FC Köln , then it was Kunter's turn: He was goalkeeper in the semi-finals against FC Bayern Munich as in the final on August 17th 1974 in a 3-1 win after extra time against Hamburger SV . When Eintracht advanced to third place in the Bundesliga in Dietrich Weise's second year as coach, the change from Kunter to Wienhold was almost complete with 13 and 21 appearances respectively. In 1975 Wienhold was the unrestricted Eintracht goalkeeper in the DFB Cup. So also in the final on June 21st in Hanover against MSV Duisburg, which the Hessians won with 1-0 goals.

When Frankfurt went down in the table in 1976, the Riederwälder landed in 9th place, Wienhold made 24 appearances in the Bundesliga, played all four matches in the cup, including the last 16 game, which was lost 1-0 after extra time on January 31, 1976 at Hertha BSC and all four games in the European Cup Winners' Cup . After the departure of coach Weise in the summer of 1976, the situation changed significantly for Wienhold: Now Heinz-Josef Koitka was bet in the Waldstadion , and Wienhold only made three Bundesliga appearances in the 1976/77 round. 1978 Koitka played all 34 games, and Wienhold moved in August 1978 in the Breisgau to SC Freiburg in the 2nd Bundesliga .

For Eintracht Frankfurt, Wienhold guarded the goal in 69 Bundesliga and six European Cup games from 1972 to 1978 and played thirteen DFB Cup games.

SC Freiburg 1978 to 1985

Wienhold was able to demonstrate his skills again in Freiburg. On the fifth match day of the 1978/79 season, under the pressure of the balance sheet of 0:14 goals and 0: 8 points, the 15-time amateur national player Wienhold from Frankfurt was re-obligated, he guarded the goal in the Dreisam Stadium for the first time . The SC managed the turnaround, the team with goalkeeper Wienhold achieved their first victory of the round with 4: 3 goals against 1. FC Saarbrücken .

By 1985, the goalkeeper played 204 games with SC Freiburg. At the age of 37, Wienhold, who had meanwhile been employed as a businessman, ended his career. In the 1989/90 round he helped out again at the age of 41 for a game for the SC and came to 205 appearances in the 2nd Bundesliga.

As a holder of the A license as a football coach, he went into business for himself as a sales representative after finishing his active career and has been running a “Uni-Shop” at the University of Freiburg since 1998.
