On June 1, 1825, the then mayor Christian Franz Thorbecke founded the “Spar-Casse der Stadt Osnabrück”. The idea of savings banks later also reached the rural areas, so that on October 7, 1882, the "savings, loan and advance cash for the district of Osnabrück" followed by the district administrator of the district of Osnabrück, Privy Councilor Carl Grote. The first wave of mergers finally took place in the 1930s. This initially only affected the institutes of the "Spar-, Leih- und Vorußkasse des Amtes Osnabrück" and the "Sparkasse des Kreises Iburg ". The latter was taken over by the former on March 30, 1933. A year later, on April 1, 1934, the Samtgemeindesparkasse Dissen and the Sparkasse zu Schledehausen joined them. At the same time, two other predecessors of the Sparkasse Osnabrück, the Kreissparkasse Wittlage and the Sparkasse der Samtgemeinden Essen and Lintorf in Bad Essen merged. The two district savings banks were finally merged in the course of the district reform in 1973.
