Rico Benatelli (born March 17, 1992 in Herdecke ) is a German soccer player .

Career

Rico Benatelli played at VfL Bochum from an early age, where his father Frank was also a professional footballer. After playing for VfL for nine years, he moved to Borussia Dortmund's youth department in 2008 . But in the A-youth it was anything but good for him, he suffered two metatarsal fractures and saw his senior career at risk.

Despite his serious injury, he got a contract for the BVB U-23 team . After a six-month start-up he established himself in David Wagner's regional league team and became an important service provider. On January 28, 2012, he scored the 2-1 winning goal against the second team from Bayer 04 Leverkusen in the 87th minute and his goal also made him the match winner in the 1-0 away win at SC Idar-Oberstein . After the second team at the end of the first half of the season was 14 points behind Sportfreunde Lotte and thus the only promotion place, the team started a furious race to catch up in the second half of the season, achieved 52 out of a maximum of 57 possible points and thus made it one point ahead of Lotte in the 3rd soccer league 2012/13 .

For the 2012/13 season , Benatelli was nominated for the BVB Champions League squad as a B-list player. Before that, he took part in the preparation of the professionals due to the many EM drivers.

On July 21, 2012 he made his debut in the third division in the 2-0 defeat at VfL Osnabrück . On July 28, 2012, the second match day of the 2012/13 season , he scored his first professional goal in the home game against Arminia Bielefeld (1-1). On the 4th matchday he helped his team to a 2-1 home win over SV Wacker Burghausen with two goals . On May 18, 2013, he and his team achieved a 1-0 away win at VfB Stuttgart II , which ensured the U-23s to stay in the 3rd division on the 38th and final day of the match.

For the 2013/14 season Benatelli moved to FC Erzgebirge Aue on a free transfer . In the 2015/16 season , Benatelli moved from second division relegated FC Erzgebirge Aue to league rivals Würzburger Kickers for free .

In March 2017 it was announced that Benatelli would be transferring to the second division team Dynamo Dresden for the 2017/18 season free of charge . He received a two-year contract there.

In March 2019, Dynamo announced that the expiring contract would not be extended and that Benatelli would switch to FC St. Pauli for the 2019/20 season . He signed a contract there until June 2022.
