Career
societies
Smarsch began playing football at Reinickendorfer Füchsen , SC Borsigwalde and BSC Rehberge in 1945 before moving to the Hertha BSC youth performance center in 2010 . In the 2017/18 season , his last year with the juniors, he became German A-Juniors champion with the A-Jugend (U19) . Smarsch came to 18 missions.
For the 2018/19 season Smarsch received his first professional contract and moved up to the professional squad. Among the professionals, he was the third goalkeeper behind Rune Jarstein and Thomas Kraft under head coach Pál Dárdai together with Jonathan Klinsmann . Smarsch sat on the bench at some Bundesliga games , but was not used. He gained match experience in the second team in the fourth-class Regionalliga Nordost , for which he was used 13 times in rotation with Jonathan Klinsmann. In the 2019/20 season , after the departure of Jonathan Klinsmann, Smarsch was the only number 3 behind Jarstein and Kraft in the professional squad . Since Kraft was injured due to a cervical vertebra injury on matchday 12, Smarsch was on the matchday squad for the first time this season. After Jarstein received the red card in the 28th minute of the game , he made his debut in the 0: 4 against FC Augsburg on November 24, 2019 in Ante Čović's last game in the Bundesliga. For the following Bundesliga games, the new head coach Jürgen Klinsmann decided on the recovered strength to replace the suspended Jarstein. Subsequently, Smarsch was allowed to guard the goal again on the last matchday under Bruno Labbadia in the 1: 2 against Borussia Mönchengladbach . He also made 12 regional league appearances.
For the 2020/21 season , the Berliner signed a three-year contract with the second division club FC St. Pauli . Hertha BSC secured a buyback option.
