Michael Esser (born November 22, 1987 in Castrop-Rauxel ) is a German football player who is active in the position of goalkeeper . He is under contract with Hannover 96 .

Career

Esser began his career as a field player at the age of four in April 1992 with Arminia Ickern's minikickers . In the F-Juniors of the VfR Rauxel he was already the goalkeeper. He then played for VfB Habinghorst , VfL Bochum and for SpVgg Erkenschwick . As a 17-year-old he made it into the first team at VfB Habinghorst in the 2005/06 season. Then he moved to SV Obercastrop and after a year to SV Sodingen .

In mid-2008 he came back to VfL Bochum, where he initially played in the second team. In the summer of 2010 he received a two-year contract for the club's first team. He made his professional debut on May 6, 2012, the 34th and final matchday of the 2011/12 season , in an away game against FC Erzgebirge Aue . In mid-April 2015, SK Sturm Graz announced the commitment of Esser. At the club from the Austrian Bundesliga, the goalkeeper signed a contract for three years with the option for another.

For the 2016/17 season he moved to Bundesliga club SV Darmstadt 98 , for whom he made his debut on August 27, 2016 (1st matchday) in the 2-0 defeat in the away game against 1. FC Köln .

After the relegation of SV Darmstadt, he moved to the promoted Hannover 96 for the 2017/18 season . Until shortly before the start of the season, it was unclear whether he or the promotion goalkeeper Philipp Tschauner would be the regular goalkeeper. Esser lost this fight, who only made three appearances in the Bundesliga in his first season in Hanover. However, Hanover's coach André Breitenreiter announced in August 2018 that he would go into the 2018/19 Bundesliga season with Esser as the new goalkeeper . During the winter break, competitor Tschauner moved to Ingolstadt on loan to the 2nd Bundesliga, while Esser was named the clear number 1.

For the 2019/20 season Hannover 96 surprised with the signing of the former national goalkeeper Ron-Robert Zieler , who became the new number 1. Tschauner, the previous number 2, moved to Leipzig . During the following winter break, Esser moved to TSG 1899 Hoffenheim after just one more competitive game for Hanover , where he signed a contract until the end of the season. The club reacted to the injury-related loss of its regular keeper Oliver Baumann . Due to the good performance of the previous goalkeeper Philipp Pentke and the quick recovery of Oliver Baumann, Esser did not play a competitive game at Hoffenheim. TSG Hoffenheim finished the season in 6th place in the table, the contract with Esser was not extended.

For the 2020/21 season , the goalkeeper returned to Hannover 96 for free. The club declared him the new number one goal before the start of the season. He ousted the goalkeeper Ron-Robert Zieler, who had contested his place in the same way a year earlier.

Others

Michael Esser grew up in Castrop and has a son and a daughter. His father Uwe trained SV Wacker Obercastrop, with his son Michael completing the 2006/07 season. Before starting his professional football career, Michael Esser trained as a plumber in Castrop-Rauxel.
