Immingham is a small English town on the Humber near the North Sea and has 12,200 inhabitants. Together with Grimsby and Cleethorpes it forms the Unitary Authority North East Lincolnshire .
history
In the city there is a monument that commemorates the departure of the Pilgrim Fathers to the Netherlands in 1608. From there they drove on via Southampton to Plymouth , from where they left for America on September 6, 1620 with the Mayflower to lead a new life there. From July 12th to 19th, 2008, Immingham celebrated the 400th anniversary of this event.
During the First World War there were submarines of the Royal Navy stationed in Immingham harbor . During the Second World War , the British commander Louis Mountbatten and several cruisers were temporarily stationed in Immingham.
Immingham was largely agricultural until the 20th century. Shortly after the railway line to Cleethorpes was built, the construction of a deep sea port at Immingham began, which was to compete with that of Kingston upon Hull . This favored a steady growth of the city. From the outbreak of the First World War until the 1950s, however, the company repeatedly had to contend with heavy losses in sales. Since the late 1970s in particular, various branches of industry have developed, such as the retail industry as well as the chemical and oil industries . The presence of the latter industries can be clearly seen in the city's characteristics as a growing workers' settlement.
Economy and Infrastructure
Together with Grimsby and Cleethorpes, Immingham forms the Greater Grimsby industrial region , which in turn is part of the Humber Ports City Region . The largest industries in Greater Grimsby are food production, port logistics, renewable energies, the chemical industry and digital media. The most striking industrial plant is Knauf Gips , a manufacturer of plasterboard .
port
The port of Immingham is the UK's largest by freight volume. In 2006 a total of 57 million tons of freight were handled, which corresponds to ten percent of the total UK volume. With its location on the Humber estuary, the port takes on a leading role in freight traffic with continental Europe and beyond.
On July 22, 1913, the port was officially opened by George V. The construction of the facility was partially financially supported by the Great Central Railway . When it opened, the port had an area of four square kilometers, including 180,000 m² of water. The port facility was connected to the city and the rail network by the Grimsby & Immingham Electric Railway .
There are two oil refineries near Immingham , operated by Total and ConocoPhillips , respectively. 70 percent of the refined oil is sold to the domestic market, 30 percent is exported to other European countries. Total's plant is the only one in the country that produces petroleum coke .
traffic
The four-lane A180 road passes south of the city and is the continuation of the M180 motorway, which ends twelve kilometers west of Immingham . The nearby Humberside Airport can be reached ten kilometers southwest of the B1210 . Immingham is the temporary terminus of European route 22 , which begins in Holyhead , Welsh . There used to be a car ferry connection to Amsterdam, where the E22 continues today. Today there are only freight connections from the Danish company DFDS to Gothenburg , Esbjerg , Cuxhaven and Rotterdam from Immingham . In addition, the shipping company Stena Line operates a truck ferry connection to Hoek van Holland .
On weekdays there is a bus service to Grimsby every 20 minutes. In the evenings and on Sundays the buses run every hour and are tied through to Cleethorpes.
The nearest train station is Habrough (three kilometers to the west), from where First TransPennine Express offers a direct rail link on the one hand via Grimsby to Cleethorpes and on the other via Scunthorpe , Doncaster and Sheffield to Manchester .
