Storstrømsbroen is a 3,199 meter long bridge that connects the Danish islands of Falster and Masnedø . From Masnedø, the connection continues via Masnedsundbroen to Zealand .

The structure, built between 1933 and 1937, is a combined rail and road bridge. It replaced an earlier railway ferry on the Vordingborg – Nykøbing railway line and carried the secondary route 153 . At the time of its completion it was the second longest railway bridge in Europe (after the Firth-of-Tay-Bridge ). The structure planned by Anker Engelund and executed by Dorman Long has 50 bridge spans. The three main openings with spans of 103.90 m + 137.75 m + 103.90 m have been designed as false arch bridges with an underlying carriageway. The clear height is 26 m. The other openings consist of steel solid wall girders with an overhead track and have a span of up to 60 m. A special feature of the Storstrømbrücke is that trusses for a high-voltage overhead line (110 kV three-phase current ) are attached to it.

During the German invasion of Denmark on April 9, 1940, the bridge was occupied by German paratroopers . The Danish bridge guards were surprised by the attack from the air and were disarmed after a short battle.

In October 2011, cracks were found on the bridge, which meant that rail traffic was closed for several weeks. Since all rail traffic on a fixed Fehmarnbelt link would have to be routed over the Storstrøm Bridge, doubts are being raised as to whether the bridge can still cope with these traffic requirements. The cost of a new bridge is estimated at 3.9 billion Danish kroner (around 523 million euros).

The Danish Parliament ( Folketing ) passed a majority decision on March 21, 2013 to build a new combined road and railway bridge with a pedestrian and cycle path over Storstrøm. The bridge is to have two lanes. The two railway tracks should be passable at 200 km / h. Planning began in 2013. The groundbreaking ceremony for the new bridge took place at the end of September 2018 in the presence of the Danish Transport Minister Ole Birk Olesen . The construction costs (including the demolition of the existing Storstrøm bridge) are given as around 550 million euros. The new bridge is to be opened for road traffic in 2022 and for rail traffic in 2023. Today's bridge will then be torn down.
