A traverse ( Latin: transversus "transversely (lying)") is a mechanical support that is used for stabilization, fastening or connection. It is used in constructions or as a load suspension device when attaching loads ("getting onto the crane") and whenever loads have to be suspended over a certain width.

In vehicle construction , cross members are used to connect the vehicle frame.

When transporting loads , one speaks of aids for load distribution, for example to attach a tether to a crane hook with the help of a crossbeam.

In line construction , traverses are used to assemble conductor cables from overhead lines on a mast , see boom (power engineering) .

In stage construction , traverses are used on the one hand as a scaffolding for the stage itself, and on the other hand for fastening the stage equipment such as B. Lights and speakers. Sometimes trusses in the event area are also part of the set itself.
