Nykøbing Mors is a small town on the Danish island of Mors . The city with around 9,000 inhabitants is located at the entrance to Sallingsund , a strait in the Limfjord . It is the administrative center of the municipality of Morsø , which lies in the Nordjylland region . Nykøbing Mors is about 30 km south of Thisted on Thy and 30 km north of Skive on the Jutian mainland.

name of the city

The origin of the place name "Nykøbing" goes back to the 13th century. Unlike older cities like Ribe or Viborg Nykobing pushed new (ny) to the circle of market places (Købstad) added. The appendix "Mors" is used to distinguish two other Danish cities of the same name, Nykøbing Falster and Nykøbing Sjælland . In written form, the name of the city is often given as “Nykøbing M”.

history

Nykøbing Mors emerged in the 13th century from the three villages Vettels , Venner and Rolstrup , which grew together into one town around their common church. In 1299 Nykøbing Mors was first mentioned as a town with market rights (Købstad) under the name nova civitas ("new trading place") , as Erik VI. Archbishop Jens Grand offered to pay part of the king's debts to the clerical dignitary with Nykøbing. The Johanniter monastery Dueholm was founded around 1370 , which attracted many craftsmen and traders to the town.

Despite competition from the nearby Thisted, the town flourished in the Middle Ages, which is due to the fertile soil on Mors, shipping and the abundance of fish in the Limfjord. But at the end of the 16th century the place experienced some setbacks caused by wars, epidemics and city fires. After the fire of 1560, only 14 houses remained undamaged. Further fires raged in 1603, 1628, 1690, 1715 and 1784. This explains the lack of medieval houses in today's cityscape. Only the export of grain to Norway in the 18th century brought a renewed upswing. The breakthrough of the North Sea into the Limfjord at the Agger Tange headland in 1825 and the construction of the Friedrich VII Canal (Frederik den VII's Canal) in 1861 at Løgstør also helped the town to grow economically.

Several large companies were founded in the 19th century. Among them, the Morsø Jernstøberi iron foundry, founded in 1853, dominated the town's economic, social, political and architectural interests. Another company was the Limfjords Kompagniet , which leased the oyster fishery in the Limfjord. The port, the oldest of which dates from 1788, was also of importance for industrial growth. From there a train ferry ran from 1899 to the town of Glyngøre on the Salling peninsula . Today many companies are based in the food industry. These include Morsø Food Park , North Atlantic Prawns and Vilsund Muslinge-Industri . However, the public service is the largest sector in the labor market.

In the 20th century, growth ended in the 1920s. By then, Nykøbing had tripled its population within 50 years. After the completion of the Sallingsund Bridge in 1978, ferry traffic to Glyngøre was stopped. The ferry pier is now used as a marina. In 1999 Nykøbing celebrated its 700th anniversary.

Attractions

Most of the buildings in the old town date from around the turn of the century, when Nykøbing developed from a fishing port and trading town into an industrial town. Nevertheless, a few small fishermen's houses north of the harbor have been preserved. The old town hall, which was built from 1846 to 1847, is located on the market square. Initially there were holding cells on the ground floor , which can still be seen today from the low window openings. At Rådhustorvet is also the Palæet , completed in 1890 , in which the Art Association of Mors exhibits modern works. The whitewashed Dueholm Monastery in Grønnegade dates from 1450, making it Nykøbing's oldest building. This last remnant of the large monastery complex is characterized by a late Gothic style, which can be recognized by the pointed-arched windows. The " Morslands Historiske Museum" is housed in the building.

In the Færkenstræde 's birthplace is Aksel Sandemose . A plaque commemorates the Danish-Norwegian writer, whose proverbial “Law of Jante” ( Janteloven ) has an - unflattering - connection to Nykøbing. The Kvisthuset on Holgersgade , built in 1840, is an example of North Jutian merchant houses from the Biedermeier period . Other listed buildings are the harbor warehouse from 1850 in Toldbodgade and the Dueholm dairy in Munkegade , the oldest parts of which date from 1536. The more recent buildings worth seeing include the cinema built in 1920 on Kirkegade and the Morsø Sparekasse from 1941 on the church square. The "Foundry Museum " (Støberimuseet) in Holgersgade shows products from the Morsø Jernstøberi iron foundry , including tiled stoves and cookers, as well as Norwegian and German bileggers .

The neo-Gothic brick church Nykøbing Kirke was built in 1891 to replace the demolished Sankt Klemenskirke . Some parts of the inventory come from the earlier building, including the Renaissance style pulpit from 1650.

In addition to the peninsula Revshammeren the headland provides Ørodde a natural protection for the port. In the green area at the natural harbor there is a yacht harbor, a bathing beach and sports facilities.
