Salling is a Danish landscape and peninsula in the north of Jutland , which protrudes into the western part of the Limfjord . Since 2007, together with the island of Fur, it has covered a large part of the Skive municipality in the Midtjylland region . Before that, from 1970 to 2006, the municipalities of Sallingsund , Sundsøre and Spøttrup and part of the "old" Skiver municipality belonged to the peninsula.

The term Salling probably originally described a fjord, the name of which is derived from the old Danish sal (for "pale", "pale", "dark"). With the syllable -ing that used to often take the form -ung had ends of many Danish place names.

Location and landscape

The approximately 500 km² area borders in the west on Venø Bay , in the northwest on Salling Sund , in the north on Fur Sund , in the northeast on Risgårde Bredning , a tributary of the Limfjord, and in the east on Hvalpsund and Skive Fjord . On the land connection with Jutland in the south, the border lies in a wide, flat valley that extends from the diked Sønderlem Vig bay over the Au Trövel Å and the Kissum Kær bog to the town of Skive . At the height of Sallingsund, the west coast is interrupted by the Lysen Bredning branch . Together with its extension, the Harre Vig bay , the water extends six kilometers inland. The coastal sections near southwestern Kås and northwestern Hvalpsund are characterized by continuously eroding cliffs .

The open and almost forestless landscape consists of moraine plateaus, which are characterized by many windmills and contain fertile soil. In the west and north the soil is a little more sandy. In the subsurface of Salling's northern half is a salt dome that pressed layers of chalk right up to the surface. The chalk layers are mined at Selde near the Fur Sund .

Economy and Transport

Agriculture and the wood industry are important industries for the region. Tourism also plays a major role. In the coastal areas there are camping sites, marinas and summer house settlements. A popular destination is the medieval Spøttrup Castle , one of Denmark's oldest mansions. On the east coast, the court of the Danish writer Jeppe Aakjær , the Jenle artists' home , has been set up as a museum.

At Glyngøre , the Sallingsund Bridge connects the peninsula with the island of Mors . The bridge over Salling Sund replaced the ferry traffic between Glyngøre and Nykøbing Mors . At Fur Sund in the north, a ferry connects the Sallingen settlement of Branden with Stenøre on the island of Fur . In the western town of Sundsøre , Salling is connected to the Himmerland peninsula by a ferry to Hvalpsund . From 1884 to 1977 went between the cities of Skive and Glyngøre Sallingbanen . The rail link created a few villages such as Roslev at the stations .
