Sallingsundbroen (Sallingsund Bridge) is a bridge opened in 1978 that spans Sallingsund in the Limfjord . The Primærrute 26 trunk road , which connects the Danish island of Mors with the Salling peninsula in northern Jutland , runs over it. The two-lane road bridge is passed by more than 10,000 vehicles every day (as of 2009).

construction

The 1717 meter long girder bridge , which is supported by two abutments and 18 reinforced concrete piers, consists of 17 openings of 93 m and two of 51 m. A clearance height of 26 m is available for ship traffic. Behind the construction stood a consortium consisting of the Danish companies Kampsax and Højgaard & Schultz , the French company Campenon Bernard and the German company Polensky & Zöllner .

history

After Vilsundbro , west of Mors, opened in 1939 , expectations rose for a bridge over Sallingsund. However, the planning had to be stopped because of the German occupation of Denmark and did not lead to a final decision until 1966. The bridge, which was finally built between 1973 and 1978, was therefore completed around 40 years later than expected. The structure replaced the ferry connection between Pinen on Salling and Plagen on Mors, which had existed since the Middle Ages (1873 to 1924 between Glyngøre and Nykøbing Mors ). The opening ceremony on May 30, 1978, at which the Danish Queen Margrethe II was present, was overshadowed by a bomb threat, so that the bridge had to be cordoned off during the ceremony. The construction of Sallingsundbro led to an increase in business settlements on Mors.

Trivia

Sallingsundbroen is used as a motif on the 50 kroner banknotes . The banknote, drawn by the artist Karin Birgitte Lund, is part of a series published from 2009 to 2011 that, among other things, has Danish bridges as a theme.
