Vilsundbroen ( German Vilsundbrücke ) is a Danish bridge in northern Jutland that crosses Vilsund in the Limfjord and connects the Danish islands of Mors and Vendsyssel-Thy . Primærrute 26, a trunk road between Aarhus and Hanstholm , runs over the two-lane road bridge and is used there by 3,200 vehicles every day (as of 2009). The 382.3 meter long arch bridge was completed in 1939 according to plans by civil engineer and Professor Anker Engelund (1889–1961). In the middle of the bascule bridge there is a passage width of 30 meters available for shipping.
history
The demand for a bridge grew in the 1920s with the increase in car traffic, which the ferry connection between Vilsund ( Thy ) and Sundby (Mors) no longer met. For a design by Engelund, which included a bridge with five steel arches and a hinged section in the middle, the district council of the Thisted Office applied for state subsidies, which were also approved in 1936. Following a public tender in May 1937 in the same year construction began, and two years later the building, the cost of which 3 million were crowns amounted, on 16 July 1939 by the Minister Thorvald Stauning and the Danish King Christian X officially inaugurated. Although the local population of Mors was satisfied with the Vilsundbroen, the new bridge was only seen as the “back entrance” to Mors. A "front entrance", that is, a bridge over the Sallingsund in the south, which also connects the island to the mainland, took almost 40 years to come with the Sallingsundbro, which was completed in 1978 . The increase in general and heavy traffic in the 1960s and 1970s, which continued to increase after the opening of Sallingsundbro, made renovation and reinforcement of the bridge necessary. The necessary work was carried out from 1974 to 1981, in the course of which a combined foot and cycle path was built on the southern side.
