Life

Edmond Charles Acton Schreiber , son of the future brigadier Acton L. Schreiber CB CMG , joined the Royal Field Artillery in 1909 and was promoted to lieutenant in 1912 . He served on the Western Front during the First World War. For his achievements he was Mentioned in Despatches and received the Distinguished Service Order . The war ended with the rank of brevet major.

In the 1930s he served at Staff College Camberley , the War Office and the Senior Officers' School in Sheerness . Promoted to brigadier, he was eventually used in the Southern Command with the Royal Artillery . These regional commands, which emerged from the corps, formed the basis for the establishment of the British Expeditionary Force (BEF). From 1939 to 1940 he was with the British Expeditionary Force in France. In 1940 he was given command of the 61st Infantry Division and later of the 45th Infantry Division . The 61st Infantry Division was intended for use in Norway, but was reclassified and was not used in mainland Europe. The 45th Infantry Division was a division of the Territorial Force and was not used outside the UK during the war. In 1941 Schreiber was given command of the 4th Division , and that same year of the V Corps . In addition to the 4th Division, this corps also comprised the 50th (Northumbrian) Infantry Division and two regiments of the Royal Artillery. In 1942, Schreiber was given command of the First Army , in which all British forces in Tunisia were combined. However, Schreiber was unable to take up his duties due to health problems.

No longer usable in the field, he was appointed General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Western Command in 1942 and of the South Eastern Command in the Aldershot Garrison in 1944. Between 1944 and 1946 he was Governor and Commander-in-Chief of Malta and retired as Lieutenant-General in 1947 .

In 1944 Schreiber became a Knight of the Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St. John . In 1948 he was named Deputy Lieutenant of Devon and in 1960 he was elected President of the Old Contemptibles Association .
