name of the city
The origin of the place name "Nykøbing" goes back to the 13th century. The appendix "Sjælland" now serves to distinguish two other Danish cities of the same name, Nykøbing Mors and Nykøbing Falster . In writing, the name of the city is often given as “Nykøbing Sj”. Unlike older cities like Ribe or Viborg Nykobing only joined in 1443 new (ny) to the group of cities with market rights (Købstad) added.
City history and sights
Nykøbing is one of Zealand's oldest towns, the first written mention of it being in the second half of the 13th century. However, the town's church is even older, dating from the first half of the 13th century. In 1290 the city was taken over by the illegitimate noble pirate and former Minister of War ( Marsk ) Stig Andersen Hvide d. Ä. burned down.
In the Middle Ages, Nykøbing lived from fishing for herring. In 1443, Nykøbing was granted town charter because after the herring shoals had disappeared, trade had replaced fishing as the main livelihood. A Latin school was established in the city in 1590, which was replaced by a Danish school in 1740. At that time Nykøbing had 350 inhabitants and was one of the smallest towns in Zealand.
Sights in Nykøbing include the harbor and the Odsherred Museum, a local history museum, and the Sherlock Holmes Museum, which is generally about crime fiction . At the southern entrance to the town is the Nykøbing Zealand water tower, built in 1914 .
Nykøbing Sjælland is the northern terminus of the West Zealand Local Railways (Vestsjællands Lokalbaner), which connect Nykøbing with Holbæk .
