Marielyst is a holiday resort on the Danish island of Falster . It is part of the parish municipality ( Danish : Sogn ) Væggerløse Sogn , which belonged to Harde Falsters Sønder Herred in what was then Maribo Amt until the Danish municipal reform of 1970 , then to Sydfalster Kommune in Storstrøms Amt , which was part of the next Danish municipal reform in 2007 in Guldborgsund Municipality in the Sjælland region.

During the summer there are up to 50,000 people in Marielyst, but the permanent population is only 725 (as of January 1, 2020). The sprawling settlement consisted of 7,200 holiday homes in 2014; the 15 km long sandy beach with a flat belt of dunes was voted “Denmark's best beach” in 2013.

location

Marielyst is located directly on the Baltic Sea about 10 km southeast of the city of Nykøbing / Falster and about 15 km north of the Gedser ferry port , the E 55 is about 3 km west. The location is elongated on the east coast of Falster.

There are the following districts - sorted from north to south:

  • Elkenøre
  • Sildestrup
  • Stovby
  • Town center
  • Bøtø
  • Bøtø Nor

South of Marielyst is the Bøtø Nature Park with numerous wild horses that have been released into the wild and the Bøtø Nor bird reserve .

Development into a seaside resort

At the end of the 19th century, after the storm surge in November 1872, spa tourism developed locally. Initially, only a farm was converted into the Hotel Marielyst summer pension in 1897 . The owner Hans Jørgensen named the farm after the name of his wife Marie. In keeping with the type of a Danish bathing hotel, it was characterized by simple comfort. Herman Bang was a well-known summer guest and wrote his scandalous novel Haabløse Slægter (1880, German 1900 Hopeless Sexes) here. Between 1898 and 1901 the accommodation was expanded to meet European standards. Now the guests had hot and spa baths, croquet , tennis courts and golf courses , a casino , billiard rooms and a theater.

The lawyer and later head of the Danish Ministry of Education Frederik Graae (1875-1948) initiated on July 28, 1906 the establishment of a seaside resort (Østersøbad). In 1908/09 spacious summer villas were built near the dike, named after the works of the poet Holger Drachmann : Troldtøj, Kitzwalde and Tannhäuser. The houses are still preserved today. In July 1914, Franz Kafka and his friend Ernst Weiß spent a few days of vacation in Marielyst.

In the beginning it was mainly wealthy capital city dwellers who built summer houses in Marielyst; since the 1920s, the place has also attracted citizens from nearby Nykøbing / Falster.

Since 1971 the former Hotel Marielyst , located directly behind the market square, has housed the Højskolen Marielyst , a community college for senior citizens.

In 2014 the town center of Marielyst Torv was redesigned: The street became a pedestrian zone, oak pavement replaced the asphalt and leads as a promenade to the beach.

traffic

Marielyst can also be reached by public transport. There are bus connections to the Gedser ferry port ( Rostock – Gedser car ferry ) and Nykøbing / Falster train station ( Vogelfluglinie Hamburg – Copenhagen).
