From Grass Croquet (French Croquet ) that played on the hard court is Roque to distinguish. Both games evolved from Paille Maille , popular in the 16th and 17th centuries , in which the wooden balls were hit with a mallet. Croquet was particularly popular in the 19th century and, as a croquet, was one of the typical leisure activities of the French middle class.

A related sport is the bicycle croquet, in which the set course has to be played through while riding a bicycle. Swingolf , which was also developed in France, is also derived from croquet. Another variant played with teams is the Japanese gate ball . However , there is no relationship to the team sport of cricket .

A mixture of croquet and golf called krolf has existed since around 1970 .

Croquet is played in different ways:

  • On the one hand, there is the organized association sport with fixed, international rules and two disciplines, official championships and leagues. The size of the pitch and the nature of the playing area are precisely defined. This sport was already an Olympic discipline in 1900 and the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club at Wimbledon also has the word "croquet" in its official name.
  • On the other hand there is the Wild Style Croquet , also called Extreme Croquet . Various courses are set up here that have to be overcome.

Official disciplines

Association croquet is the oldest internationally played discipline of the game. The goal is to get your two balls in front of your opponent to the target stake called the peg . If you pass a goal, you get a follow-up blow and can play the three remaining balls in the game again. Hitting a ball called a roque gives you two follow-up blows. First, the game ball ( ball in the hand ) is placed on the hit ball and played for the croquet hit that gives it its name . Then the next blow takes place. The "croqueted" ball is usually played in the direction of the goal but one so that you later have a point of contact, called a pioneer . The winner is whoever crossed the track first.

In the golf croquet , the balls are pushed alternately. You play for the point of a certain goal. If the goal is passed, everyone plays for the next goal. Whoever has a certain number of points first is the winner of the game.

Tournament operation in Germany

In 1998 the German Croquet Federation was founded, to which ten clubs nationwide are affiliated. There are nine croquet places in six federal states that comply with international regulations. German championships have been held annually since 1998 in the two disciplines Association Croquet and Golf Croquet .
