history

The church of Karis

The first written mention of Karis comes from the year 1326. In the Middle Ages, Karis was one of the most important places in Uusimaa thanks to the castles Raseborg , Grabbacka and Junkarsborg . Raseborg Castle is now in the area of Ekenäs , the ruins of the other two castles can be visited in Karis. Grabbacka was built at the end of the 15th century and destroyed by fire in 1672. Junkarsborg Castle was built of wood and probably dates from the first half of the 14th century, but it was abandoned around 1400. The Church of St. Catherine in Karis was consecrated in 1470. In the middle of the 16th century, the Swedish King Gustav I. Wasa founded Finland's first ironworks in Svartå (Mustio) in the area of Karis municipality . It is still in operation today. A wooden church (1761) and a rococo manor (1793) were also built in Svartå . The Karis community was founded in 1870. The capital Karis broke away in 1930 as an independent market town ( köping / kauppala ) from the surrounding rural community Karis . In 1969 the rural community was incorporated into the market town again, and in 1977 Karis received the status of a town. In 2009 the communal independence of Karis ended when it was incorporated into Raseborg.
