The rural municipality Karis ( Swedish. Karis landskommun , Finnish. Karjaan maalaiskunta ) is a former municipality in Finland . It was in the south of the country in the Uusimaa region . The rural community Karis was established in 1930 when the main town Karis (Karjaa) was separated from the surrounding rural community as an independent market town ( köping / kauppala ). In 1969 the rural community reunited with the market town. This received city rights in 1977 and has belonged to the newly founded city of Raseborg since 2009 . The rural community of Karis had an area of ​​164 km². In 1960 the population was 2,745, of which 81.5% were Finland-Swedes .
