Nachum Erlich (born June 28, 1959 in Jerusalem , Israel ) is an Israeli violin virtuoso and lecturer in music education.

Life

Erlich began studying the violin with his father Moshe Erlich, a member of the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra, and continued with Yair Kless at the Rubin Conservatory in Jerusalem, today's Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance . From 1975 to 1981 he was a master student at the Bern Conservatory with Max Rostal , where he graduated with a concert diploma. In addition to his studies, he completed master classes with Nathan Milstein and Henryk Szeryng , and later several studies with Steven Staryk.

From 1981 to 1991 Nachum Erlich taught at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki. As a lecturer, he supervised master classes in Germany, Finland, Italy, Poland, Korea, Brazil, Austria, Japan, China and the USA. Since 1991 he has held a professorship for violin at the State University of Music in Karlsruhe .

As a soloist he worked with the conductors Moshe Atzmon , Esa-Pekka Salonen , Rudolf Baumgartner , Okku Kamu , Jukka-Pekka Saraste , Walter Weller and Sergiu Comissiona. In the field of chamber music, Erlich played with Alfons Kontarsky , Siegfried Mauser , Kalle Randalu , Rudolf Meister , Julius Berger , Fany Solter , Martin Ostertag , Edward Vanderspar , Wolfgang Meyer and Eduard Brunner . He is particularly interested in the discovery and interpretation of rarely performed works and especially the works of Max Reger . In January 2004 a recording of the sonatas op. 122 and op. 139 with the pianist Siegfried Mauser was published by Hänssler Verlag.

Since his student days, working with chamber orchestras has played a major role in Nachum Erlich's artistic work. He was a member and concertmaster of the Festival Strings Lucerne , the Camerata Bern and the Basel Chamber Orchestra . In 2001 he took over the direction of the chamber orchestra of the Karlsruhe University of Music, with which he recorded a CD including the recording of the Concerto for Two Violins in D minor by Johann Sebastian Bach together with the violinist Ivri Gitlis . Nachum Erlich has been Artist in Residence at Heidelberg University since April 2002 . There he is involved in the design of the university's musical program, looks after the strings of the Collegium Musicum and appears as a soloist. He lives in Karlsruhe .
