Eduard Brunner (clarinetist)
Eduard Brunner (born July 14, 1939 in Basel ; † April 27, 2017 in Munich ) was a Swiss clarinetist and university teacher .
Life
Eduard Brunner first studied at the Conservatory in Basel , where he obtained his soloist and orchestral diploma at the age of 18, then with Louis Cahuzac in Paris . At the age of 20 he began his career as a soloist and chamber musician (often together with the oboist Heinz Holliger or the flutist Aurèle Nicolet ), mainly in Germany and Switzerland. In 1962 and 1963 he was principal clarinetist with the Bremen Philharmonic and from 1963 with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra under Rafael Kubelík . (Brunner played the Böhm clarinet, which is seldom tolerated in German symphony orchestras. The fact that he was still engaged in Munich is probably due to Rafael Kubelik.)
Eduards Brunner's chamber music partners include Alfred Brendel, Oleg Kagan, Gidon Kremer, Andras Schiff, Jurij Bashmet, Kim Kashkashian, Natalia Gutman, Tatevik Mokatsian and the musicians of the Borodin and Hagen Quartet.
As a soloist and chamber music player, he has recorded around 250 works from the entire clarinet repertoire for recordings on records and CDs. “He not only devoted himself to the current repertoire, but always remained curious about the modern and contemporary.” One example is the CD Music for Solo Clarinet , released in 2011 . At times Brunner was a professor at the University of Music in Saarbrücken and Karlsruhe.
Thanks to his initiative, many compositions for clarinet have been created, including concerts by Cristóbal Halffter and Krzysztof Meyer as well as chamber music works by Edisson Denissow , Augustyn Bloch and Toshio Hosokawa . Through his close collaboration with Helmut Lachenmann on the works he premiered Dal niente (1970) for solo clarinet, Accanto (1975–1976) for clarinet and orchestra and with the trio Allegro sostenuto (1986–1988), he contributed significantly to the development of new playing techniques on his Instrument at.
Eduard Brunner died on April 27, 2017 at the age of 77. The world-renowned and admired clarinetist gave his last public concert at the Saarbrücken Summer Music 2016 together with the Et Arsis Piano Quartet.
