Aurèle Nicolet

Georges Aurèle Nicolet (born January 22, 1926 in Neuchâtel ; † January 29, 2016 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) was a Swiss flautist .

Life

Aurèle Nicolet studied at the Conservatory in Zurich with André Jaunet (flute) and with Willy Burkhard ( theory and composition ), then, from 1945 to 1947, at the Paris Conservatory with Marcel Moyse and Yvonne Drappier. In 1947 he won first prize at the Conservatoire, and in 1948 at the Concours International de Genève . From 1945 to 1947 he played in the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich , from 1948 to 1950 as principal flutist in the City Orchestra Winterthur . Wilhelm Furtwängler brought him to the Berlin Philharmonic as principal flautist in 1950 , to which he was a member until 1959.

From 1952 to 1965 Nicolet was a professor at the University of the Arts in Berlin . During this time he also taught flute and chamber music at the summer courses of the Salzburg Mozarteum . From 1965 to 1981 he was a professor at the University of Music in Freiburg im Breisgau. During these years he also played frequently with the Munich Bach Orchestra under Karl Richter .

His chamber music partners were u. a. András Schiff , Natalia Gutmann , Kolja Blacher , Oleg Maisenberg , Jean-Pierre Rampal , Heinz Holliger , Ursula Holliger , Bruno Canino , Vladimir Spivakov , Tabea Zimmermann and Juri Baschmet . Toru Takemitsu , György Ligeti , Aribert Reimann , Wolfgang Hufschmidt and Edisson Wassiljewitsch Denissow wrote pieces for him. He premiered other works by Cristóbal Halffter , Heinz Holliger, Klaus Huber and Rudolf Kelterborn , among others .

From 1967 he was married to Christiane Nicolet, a flautist and music producer for Swiss radio SRF 2 Kultur .

In 1963 Nicolet was awarded the German Critics' Prize. He appears as a character in My Century (Chapter 1963) by Günter Grass , with whom he performed pieces for speaking voice and flute that he composed in 1966 in the Old Church of Boswil . Nicolet's students include Emmanuel Pahud and Felix Renggli .

One week after his 90th birthday, Nicolet died on January 29, 2016 in Freiburg im Breisgau.
