The Karis – Hanko railway line ( Finnish Hangon rata ; Swedish Hangöbanan ) is a railway line in Finland . It leads from Karis (Karjaa) to Hanko (Hangö). The line has the Russian track width of 1524 mm, a length of 49.3 km, is single-lane and is not electrified. The Finnish state owns the route . The route is operated by the state-owned railway company VR-Yhtymä .

history

Operation on the line began on October 8, 1873 as part of the Hanko - Hyvinkää line . It was taken over by the state on May 1, 1875.

On weekdays six pairs of trains run continuously between Karis and Hanko, on Saturdays and Sundays seven, with stops at all stations. There are also three bus connections on weekdays (as of October 2018). There are also freight trains running.

There were 25 level crossings on the line in 2009, 10 of which were provided with safety devices. The other 15 level crossings were unsecured. In 2012 there were only 24 crossings, 9 of which were secured. In 2008, 2.9 million tons of goods were transported on the route. Between Karis and route kilometer 205.7, 120 km / h are permitted for both passenger and freight traffic. Between kilometer 205.7 and Hanko -Pohjoinen 60 km / h are allowed and between Hanko-Pohjoinen and Hanko 35 km / h.
