Luis Mariano Ortega Martínez (born April 17, 1971 in Esparreguera ) is a Spanish handball coach and former handball player , who was mostly used on the right back area.

The 1.89 m tall and 87 kg heavy left-hander began his professional career in 1992 at BM Valladolid in the ASOBAL league . In 1996 he moved to the then top club CB Cantabria Santander , with whom he won the Copa ASOBAL in 1997 and 1998 and the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1998. In 2001 he signed with BM Ciudad Real , with whom he again triumphed in the cup winners competition in 2002 and 2003. In 2003 he also won the Copa del Rey de Balonmano , in 2004 his only championship and the Copa ASOBAL and in 2005 the Supercopa Asobal and the Copa ASOBAL. He then joined BM Aragón . Internationally, he reached the final in the 2006/07 EHF Cup and the semi-finals in 2007/08 and 2008/09. In the 2008/09 season he was player- coach and assistant coach .

From 2009 he was head coach in Aragón. In the 2011/12 European Cup Winners' Cup, he made it to the semi-finals. From 2012 to 2014 he led the team from Zaragoza among the top 5 of the ASOBAL league. From 2014 he coached the Portuguese club Benfica Lisbon .

With the Spanish national team , Mariano Ortega won gold at the 2005 World Championships , silver at the 1998 and 2006 European Championships and bronze at the 2000 European Championships . Ortega played 131 international matches in which he scored 247 goals.
