József Éles (born February 16, 1969 in Budapest ) is a Hungarian handball coach and former handball player .

Career

The 1.90 m tall and 86 kg heavy right-handed man was mostly used in the left rear area. He started at Budapest Spartacus SC, with whom he later played in the Hungarian second division. In 1989 he moved to the first division Solymári SC, which he led to a podium in 1991. Thereupon the KC Veszprém signed him , which he should throw to an international top club in the following twelve years. In his first year he won the European Cup Winners' Cup , a year later he reached the final again. On July 1, 2000, Éles was seriously injured in a car accident. He suffered a concussion, a fracture of the collarbone and torn ligaments in his knee. After a year of rehabilitation, he returned to the field in preparation for the 2001/02 season. In the EHF Champions League 2001/02 he reached the final against SC Magdeburg , which he lost despite a home win by a five-goal defeat in Magdeburg. After ten championships and cup victories, the most successful goalscorer in the club's history joined the Greek AC Filippos Verias and played together with other old stars such as Vyacheslav Atawin and Alexander Tutschkin . After two unsuccessful seasons, he let his career at the Swiss GC Amicitia Zurich end.

With the Hungarian national team , József Éles played 179 international matches between 1989 and 2000 , in which he scored 828 goals. Although he never won a medal with Hungary, he was always one of the top scorers in international tournaments. So Éles was together with Marc Baumgartner and Yoon Kyung-shin in the World Cup 1993 top scorer at the World Cup 1997 runners-up behind Yoon and in the 1999 World Cup in fourth. He also took part in the 1992 Olympics.

As a trainer, Éles was initially active in Switzerland at GC Amicitia Zurich and TV Endingen, in Romania at CSU Politehnica Timișoara and in Hungary at Gyöngyösi FKK and Kiskunhalas NKSE. From 2011 he was in charge of the women's national team of the Dominican Republic. He runs his own handball school in Balatonalmádi .
