history

The southern part of today's Waisenhausplatz was laid out in the middle of the 16th century. At the beginning it was called cattle market, then wood market, occasionally Weinplatz, in the 18th and 19th centuries the place was called Schweinmarkt. The middle part was created by landfill of Tachnaglergrabens he was called Zeughausplatz after the Great armory stood here. The northern part, piled up over the old Zeugwartgarten , was not completed until 1784; it was called Waisenhausplatz after the boys' orphanage built by Ludwig Emanuel Zehender and Samuel Jakob Imhoof in 1782/83 . The Bern canton police have resided in the baroque building since 1942 . It was only after the Great Armory was demolished in 1877 that the whole square began to be called an orphanage square.

In the recent past, the northern part has attracted artistic and cultural creation. At the end of November 1983 the Meret-Oppenheim-Brunnen , also popularly known as the Oppenheimbrunnen , was unveiled and since 2004 the center for cultural production PROGR , in the former municipal Progymnasium Bern, has been offering space for creative people .
